Our Los Osos Water Polo team makes waves in their CIF Finals match against Rancho Cucamonga High School
Los Osos High School Girls Water Polo team made a splash this season with a second place finish in league and qualification to the Division 2 CIF playoffs. Even if they lost in the final game, the team showed great dedication and teamwork and perseverance during the entire season, proving they are a force to be reckoned with.
Alexandra Frank, a freshman on the varsity team, reflected on the journey with the team and credited the senior leaders on a successful season. “Our final game went well, even though we ended up losing. I think we all put in a lot of effort in that game and throughout the whole season as well. I would definitely consider both of our seniors, McKenna Dunning and Ani Babayan as very valuable players because their talent and experience really showed this season,” shared Frank.
Prominent seniors who helped lead the team included McKenna Dunning and Ani Babayan, who not only contributed highly to the team but also invaluable experience. Their leadership came through all season long as they urged their young teammates through tough times and high-pressure moments. Their efforts were crucial in helping Los Osos advance in CIF and compete at such a high level.
This season proved challenging with the team up against some tough league opponents. One of the most difficult matchups took place with Rancho Cucamonga High School, which ended in a loss. But the team rebounded and finished second in the league.
This season was defined by the camaraderie and team spirit displayed by the girls as much as it was by their accomplishments in the pool. “Our coaches were very supportive throughout the whole entire season,” Frank said. “They did everything they could to make us better at our sport but still made sure we had fun. I know the team can’t thank Coach Jordan and Coach Josh enough!” It’s evident that the coaches have been pillars for the team, managing to maintain a balance between being competitive and having fun, making sure every player was supported and inspired in the process.
Division 2 CIF was a huge accomplishment for the team as they have worked hard for months to get there. The future showed promise with younger players contributing to the teams playoff performance, securing their reputation as a competitive team.
As graduation quickly approaches and the class of 2025 prepares to leave, it is clear that this year’s Girls Water Polo seniors have left a lasting impact on the program. Their commitment and willingness to lead have set the standard for the underclassmen, who will now be expected to continue that momentum into next season. Los Osos has a strong basis and a growing team that can only lead to success in the coming years.
Overall, the 2024 season was one to remember. From fierce competition to moments of triumph, the Los Osos Girls Water Polo team demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and a true love for the sport. While their CIF run may have ended sooner than they hoped, their achievements have left a lasting impression on the school and the community.
