Summer is the time for relaxation, not taking more classes to increase stress. (FreePik)
Believe it or not, there are only days left of school and summer is quickly approaching. It’s crazy how fast this year has gone by, and it’s already almost time for next school year.
Over the course of the last two months, all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors were called in with their counselors to register their classes for next year.
Almost all the people I know are signing up to take a class over the summer, but I don’t agree with it. I’d rather have my summer to relax, go on vacations, and to not have to think about school at all.
Summer was created to give students a break from school, so why not take advantage of that?
Especially as high school students, we feel burnt out all the time. Every day, we go to school, come home, and do our homework, and most of us probably spend our remaining time scrolling or being on a screen.
Some people stay after school to do a number of things, whether that be a club, theater, band, or sport.
Mental health is even more important than academic success. A long break is definitely needed to not think about school, and to take time to go on vacations and do something fun.
Additionally, you would be missing out on life experiences and memories.
Even though we all might not be taking that big trip to Hawaii or Italy, we can still do things that we normally can’t do during the school year, like swimming, having sleepovers, and being outside more.
One thing most teenagers barely do is spend time with family. With all the stresses of school, I get it if you just want some chill time or don’t even have time at all to spend with your family.
But it’s really important to do things with your family to maintain a healthy relationship, and summer is the perfect opportunity for that.
You can go on vacations, take a trip to the beach, take walks, or simply play games and watch movies at home.
If you took classes over summer, you would barely have time to spend with your family because of the usual classes and homework.
Summer goes by so fast, and before you know it, it’s time to start the next school year. And then you’re back in school for the next nine months with barely any time off.
Studies done through high schools in the U.S. showed that around 80 percent of students who don’t take summer classes return to school with a fresher mind and tend to do better within the first few months of school.
Taking a summer class can make you feel like you’re in an endless cycle of work and pressure.
Another issue is sleep. The average teenager needs eight to ten hours of sleep a night to function properly. I know most of us aren’t getting that much sleep during the general school year.
However, during summer, you can relax and sleep whenever you want; you don’t have to go back to school on Monday.
Summer is meant to give us a break from school, not to stress ourselves over even more work and classes.
