The LOHS Marching Band hard at work rehearsing sets from their 2025 field show production, “Inertia.”
For the past 20 years, the Los Osos Regiment has been known for its captivating field shows and exhilarating performances, so what do they have in store for the audience this year?
Over the summer, the band members put in nearly 100 hours of rehearsals to produce this year’s field show titled “Inertia.” This show aims to explore the ideas and complexities of Newton’s Laws of Motion, focusing on three aspects that will be the movements of the show: Inertia, Force, and Action versus Reaction.
One of the most iconic symbols of physics, Newton’s cradle, will be a principal theme of the show, displayed on the field not only by the two Newton’s cradle props, but also by the visual aspects and movements of the performers. This personifies the perpetual force of motion and will demonstrate how motion continues based on an outside force to the viewers.
The staff members and creative team have worked to develop unique and innovative ways to convey the show’s theme to the audience, one of which is band director Mr. Steve Krumbine. When asked about how the show will be presented on the field, Krumbine said, “Everything’s built on this constant idea of movement, and [the props and visuals] are constantly being moved from one side of the field to the other, then back again.”
These ideas and concepts that represent the theme of their show have been spread across all aspects of the program, including the color guard. Head Colorguard Captain and Senior Kendall Thomas stated, “Color guard is using a lot of the musicality that the band is bringing and incorporating that into their performance.”
When all of these elements are put together throughout the season, the Regiment will be able to perform their enticing and theatrical field show, ensuring that all their hard work and countless hours will have really paid off.
This past summer, the Band Camp hours were increased to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for two weeks in July, with six days of mini camp from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in May and June. This was a huge change for the band, as it almost doubled the quantity of rehearsals from past years, but the band rose to the challenge and has shown extreme improvements and good results from their hard work.
When asked about these changes in the program, Head Drum Major and Senior Aniya Greene remarked, “I’m definitely liking our motive this year, and we have been able to learn and move really quickly compared to last year.”
During all of these hours of rehearsal, the performers learned a variety of new skills, starting with basic forms of technique for not only marching, but dance basics as well. Shortly after, they learned specific details to march a show on the field, and quickly combined that with the music they had been working on with the coaching staff to produce the show they would be competing with.
The students were able to make exceptional progress on their musical material and visual requirements, learning double the amount of music and more advanced visual aspects compared to past years, allowing for an easier path to excellence. Krumbine stated, “Everyone is starting to see this push towards excellence, and this is what we have to achieve, the idea that our baseline is to be excellent.”
Although it took a lot of effort and resilience from the students, the band continues to make strides in their learning, obtaining new skills and achieving higher levels of performance than ever before, all in an effort to improve their scores and achieve success across the program.
Throughout the season, the regiment will be performing at home football games, providing a pregame show, pep tunes, and a halftime performance. They will also be competing in various CSBC Field Show tournaments throughout October and November, working and rehearsing in preparation to perform their show flawlessly at the Championships in November.
This increase in hard work and motivation to be successful across the program has already shown great effects, and the staff and student leadership are optimistic that it will continue to foster and grow throughout the season, bringing victory and an upward rise to the legacy of the Los Osos music program.
