The Los Osos High School girls’ varsity tennis team started the year with high energy and great spirit as they were victorious in their tight match with Arcadia High School girls, winning with a score of 10-8. Girls varsity tennis had their first match of the new season on August 26 at Arcadia High School, their fiery spirits matching the high temperature of 99 degrees Fahrenheit that burned the courts.
Junior Ariana Ateia, number two singles, expressed her excitement for this upcoming season after her first match: “I just won my first match of the season and it was so nice to have my teammates watch and cheer for me again…I’m excited to see how everyone’s improved and how our team will perform this season… I have to go cheer on my teammates now!”
Ateia’s excited and optimistic character was infectious throughout the entire team, as the atmosphere was flooded with exclamations of motivation for their teammates that fueled the players on the court. Their long rallies and thrilling tiebreakers could not compare to the determination of the Grizzlies, who easily adjusted and displayed uncompromising strength in fighting Arcadia’s stringent challengers.
The couples pairs were also a huge factor in the win, with partnerships showing effective communication and chemistry despite early-season nerves. These turning point moments came when Los Osos pairs rallied from being down in sets, keeping their composure and fighting out victories in the clutch. That they were able to turn things around mid-march was a testament to the talent the Grizzlies enjoy in singles and doubles.
Senior Captains Karis Adan and Sophia Andrade took it upon themselves to set the tone for the team, encouraging younger players and keeping spirits high through tough times. Not only did their leadership give stability on the court, but it also showed the newcomers what it’s like to play with pride and discipline. It is not far-fetched to say that Karis and Sophia’s presence helped the team gain confidence and enabled them to stay focused during crucial points.
Head Coach Delgadio praised his team’s performance in the first game of the season, commending them for their ability to hold their focus and composure when pressured. “It’s always tough to start the season playing a game this close, but the girls handled it well. This is a great sign for this upcoming season.”
Their victory sets them on a positive note for the rest of the season as the team continues to progress forward, with returning upperclassmen bringing experience and underclassmen bringing new energy. The Los Osos girls’ varsity team is looking to continue building up its momentum and making its mark this season.
