I want to speak on how school time needs to be changed, mostly for high school students, is that some teenagers struggle to get up in the morning, but ensuring they get enough sleep could be vital for health in later life.
Most people are required to get ten hours of sleep; some get more or less, but many only sleep up to six or eight hours. That’s the minimum of sleep; it’s like receiving a C- in a class. The brain isn’t even active once you wake up. You’re still very sleepy.
You have to do a few things like eat something in the morning, then do some chores, and your brain will slowly get more awake. Most of the time when we show up to school, we can’t even pay attention, or sometimes we don’t even know what we are learning because we wake up and our minds have tasks to complete right away.
The brain is not fully awake. One of the reasons why I think school should start later,e r like around Ten,Ten Thirty is because that’s when our brain is fully awake. It’s been up for some time now, and we get a lot of sleep. Studies show that a lack of sleep can cause students to not remember anything. Some teachers tell students to stay up all night for the exam they have the next day, but what teachers don’t realize is that they’re making it worse on the students.
The brain needs to rest a lot for it to function well and do well. If teens just study all night with no sleep and their brains don’t rest, then we are most likely failing the exam we studied all night before.
That’s one of many reasons why I think school should start later, because our brain needs the right amount of rest so we can perform well in our classes and not fall asleep and lack in our studies. Male students in particular also struggle to fall asleep; they are fighting against their own bodies, especially during puberty.
I asked my dad how he feels waking up so early at four in the morning and going to work every day. His exact words were “I feel like a zombie,” and that’s how we teens feel, but our parents always hit us with saying “ You’re so young, what are you tired of?” which is dumb because when I asked my dad how it felt to wake up so early, he said he felt like a zombie. Despite this, parents disregard our fatigue by saying that we cannot be tired because we are young.
By also starting school later, there will be a huge change in students’ performance at school. They will have so much energy they won’t have to wake up feeling all dead, and the feeling of not wanting to go. There would also be a drastic improvement in their behavior problems.
