In the midst of current events, it can be overwhelming to be a teenager listening in on current events with seemingly no control.
Through all of this, teenagers are under the influence that they have little to no effect on what happens in other parts of the world.
This is where the Relief For Refugees Club comes in handy; a club run by students to help raise funds for refugees across the world.
The club donation system operates as such: club members work together to brainstorm ideas for fundraising through activities and sales. In return, profits are collected throughout the school year and divided up at the end of the year.
Division of the profits avoids bias by splitting the funds based on the percentage of votes for certain locations.
For example, if 15% of votes went toward one place, 15% of the raised profits would be donated to organizations in that place, so on and so forth.
Club founder and president, Junior Ahmad Amer, conveyed his inspiration behind the club’s creation. Amer said, “I started the club before the Palestine conflict began as a way to help the countries around the world who are dealing with refugee crises, as I’ve been close to the cause my entire life.
“The club became even more important when we started to see what’s going on in Gaza. As such, our club is dedicated to raising money for refugees around the world to better their living conditions.”
Amer’s personal association to the club is relatable to various students at Osos, which is what builds its strong and dedicated community aspect.
Vice president Junior Sophia Sedano expressed her interest in co-owning the club. Sedano said, “I wanted to be vice president because I have experience with immigrant family members and the story behind the club was reminiscent of some of their experiences.”
At Osos, The Relief For Refugees Club is so beneficial because it gives students an outlet to spend their time having fun as well as helping others.
With so many students at Osos having such a strong will to speak up and make a difference in the topics they feel passionate about, the club is essential for students as well as helpful to people around the world.
