Narrated by creator Reesa Teesa, the 50-part TikTok series “Who TF Did I Marry” took the app by storm. The app, which had previously been blamed for allegedly decreasing attention spans amongst audiences, saw one of the largest audiences ever watching Teesa’s videos.
This is surprising because the series spanned 50 videos, each 10 minutes long, clocking in at a whopping 8 hours of content. Longer than YouTube video essays, and about the same length as an audiobook, the massive appeal of the videos astonished many.
Throughout the installments, we watch Teesa in very normal settings like her home and car explaining the rocky marriage she experienced during quarantine. There is no visual flair in the videos, instead, it feels like a Facetime call between the listener and the video creator.
To protect her divorcee’s identity, she calls him by the name “Legion”; a biblical allusion that refers to demons possessing a man. Based on Teesa’s story, this name is no understatement. From the very beginning, we are bombarded with red flag after red flag.
Teesa is open about her ignorance when it comes to these problems.“you would have thought I was colorblind because I ignored all of that.” she said.
The pair met in March of 2020, just as a deadly pandemic swallowed the world as we knew it and sent us into a global pandemic. Legion seemed to have a lot of potential as a life partner, displaying good traits and outwardly expressing his desire to start a family. Dangerously in love at the height of their honeymoon phase, the pair moved into an apartment together.
Legion takes advantage of the unknown of the pandemic, using it as a shield for his unfulfilled promises and intentions, complicating Teesa’s understanding of reality.
The pair expressed interest in moving out of the apartment and investing in a home. Despite seeking out multiple properties and claiming financial readiness, Legion’s inability to provide proof of funds led to failed attempts at buying a house.
Legion’s extravagant gestures, like shopping for expensive cars, failed to materialize, and more lies began to unravel as Teesa discovered explicit messages on his phone, prompting her to seek counseling due to Legion’s defensive behavior and refusal to verify financial claims.
Teesa’s cautiousness grows as she uncovers inconsistencies in Legion’s personal information and educational background, leading to further doubts about his honesty and intentions. The lies continue to intensify with fabricated injuries, false claims of familial tragedies, and infidelity, pushing Teesa to confront him about his deceit and manipulation.
Teesa encounters Legion, questioning him about his lies. After hours of fighting, the quarrel ultimately ends in his eviction from the apartment. After the incident, he continues to stay persistent, continuing to harass Teesa in any way possible. His tenacity leads to both police involvement and Teesa’s decision to move away, by cutting ties with him completely, ending the saga of manipulation and deceit.
Teesa reflected on the emotional toll of Legion’s manipulation and the relief of breaking free from his toxic influence, emphasizing the importance of moving forward with her life.
