One of the most competitive, up-and-coming sports that our school has seen this year is volleyball. Specifically, the freshman girl’s volleyball team. They have absolutely dominated their games and have been on a non-stop winning streak.
The freshmen on this team have an extremely close-knit friendship and this is seen both on and off the court. They have won every game they’ve played thus far in the season all due to their coordination and teamwork.
When asked about the dynamics of the team, Freshman Nayla Boustani said, “I felt very welcomed from the beginning. It feels like one big friend group. All the girls are so easy to talk to and we all connected really quickly!”
From in-sync cheers to off-the-court bonding, it is clear that this group of girls has a strong friendship. Freshman Brooke Lopez said that, “I feel like the friendships I have made through this sport have definitely helped with my integration into high school because I have more friends and it really helps to know people all around and feel welcomed!”
On August 24, these girls went to a tournament at Santiago High School. At this tournament, the girls won back-to-back games against ten other teams, leaving them in first place. They are the first freshman volleyball team at Los Osos High School to bring a first-place plaque home. Freshman Roma Catalina Balbas said, “Honestly, winning the tournament felt extremely accomplished and such a relief. During the tournament, we didn’t know if we were going to win or lose so the anticipation was pretty stressful.”
One of the greatest things about the Los Osos volleyball team is the “sister system” where a Freshman or Sophomore is partnered up with a Junior or Senior. This forms close bonds between the teams and gives the underclassmen someone to look up to. “I feel like the ‘sister system’ is good. It’s very supportive and makes me feel like I have people to talk to since I was introduced to my ‘big sister’. My teammates are so nice and extremely supportive!” says Freshman Savannah Watts.
Coach Mainor Ramos has been the driving force behind the girl’s success. He is constantly pushing and supporting them, encouraging them, and, due to this, their improvement has shown rapidly.
Our school’s volleyball team has accomplished so much in the little time that they have had this school year and we are likely to see a lot more wins from these girls.
