One of the various clubs on the Los Osos High School (LOHS) campus calls for creative and inspired students to visit and join in on the community meetings. Accessible opportunities to express the diverse minds at this school lie within the LOHS Fashion Club.
The club is not new to our school, however, a brand-new staff has created a refreshed and inviting atmosphere for the unique organization. The fashion club instantly made a thunderous amount of noise from the very first Instagram post, on the @losososfashionclub account, it was blatantly obvious that a great deal of students felt drawn to the club.
The first meeting reflected the initial excitement perfectly, within minutes the room was filled with students eager to participate in the activities. Though it didn’t take long for every seat in the class to be filled, even the make-shift seats, the staff took on the easily overwhelming challenge like champs.
Painting tote bags was the objective of the first meeting, held on September 5, and even though there were many attendees, it was clear that each and every member was taken care of and having fun. In the first meeting alone, students were able to have creative liberty through fashion, in a comforting environment.
The foundation of the club was described in an interview by current President Christine Smith: “The club was started by one of my friends last year, as a way to incorporate fashion and personal style into an interactive and fun club environment. When they graduated, they wanted me to help keep their club strong and thriving!”
The attempt at maintaining the same positive energy and interactive nature that was first established was definitely a success, so far at least. However, future plans for meetings suggest that it will not be lost, the standard that Smith stated regarding the past staff’s wishes will be met.
The future of the club does not only involve addressing the surface level of fashion, but Vice President Isaac Martinez also said, “Throughout the year we plan to help out the community such as the animal shelters, women and children’s homes, and foster care systems. We’d love to create blankets, upcycle jeans, and just donate any clothes to the less fortunate”.
Including another club that aims to help out the entirety of our society is exactly what the students at LOHS need to be encouraging, Fashion Club is taking the initiative to do so.
Based on what Smith said, “The next meeting will be blanket weaving, and we will be donating the blankets to a local shelter,” the club will not only talk about helping the less fortunate, they also actually take initiative and make their aspirations a reality.
According to the staff, the next meeting will also incorporate a fellow club, Friends4fosters, and they are aiming to host a “Jeans for Teens” event. More information will be provided by the Instagram account, @friendsforfosters.
A sense of pride was felt by the President and Vice President, along with every member of staff, in regard to the accomplishment of their first meeting. There was a total of 73 students in attendance, and the opportunity to bond over passionate topics while also being able to provide for your community will likely keep interest alive for upcoming meetings.
The warmth of the club’s stems from the very heart of it, the staff has created a relationship with each other that is able to offer members a community worthy of being a part of.
Martinez said, “All of the officers are sort of the same level, there’s no levels of superiority and we all pitch in the same amount of effort.”
Joining the Fashion Club is a great way to meet new people who share the same interests as you, as well as to make the campus a place that evokes comfort and confidence.
