On June 21st, Gracie Madigan Abrams, a well known growing pop artist (I think she’s more alternative based on her other songs) released her second album. She has around 25.2 million monthly streamers on Spotify.
She is also 212th in the world. The Secret of Us (TSOU) is 47 minutes long, and has 13 songs. On this album she has one collaboration, which was with Taylor Swift, and 2 music videos (“Risk” and “I Love You, I’m Sorry”). Abrams is currently on tour for TSOU, she’s also toured with Taylor Swift for Swift’s “Eras Tour”.
The songs that are on TSOU are “Felt Good About You”, “Risk”, “Blowing Smoke”, “I Love You, I’m Sorry”, “us. (feat. Taylor Swift)”, “Let It Happen”, “Tough Love”, “I Knew It, I Know You”, “Gave You I Gave You I” “Normal Thing”, “Good Luck Charlie”, “Free Now” (my favorite), and “Close To You”.
Songs that got “TikTokified” (basically getting popular from/on TikTok) from this album are “Close To You” and “I Love You, I’m Sorry”. Some fans get kinda mad when songs get “TikTokified” cause they try gatekeeping the songs, but i think it just means the song is really good and a lot of people love it.
My personal favorites from this album (it’s really hard to choose since I love this album so much) are “Free Now”, “us. (feat. Taylor Swift)”, and “Blowing Smoke”. I absolutely love these songs. The lyrics speak to me so well.
Abrams released “Risk” as the first single of this album. It’s one of the more loved songs on this album. The bridge of this song is amazing. It also has a music video for it.
Abrams is a lyrical genius. Track 10, “Normal Thing”, she says, “I had a backbone made of glass and then it broke
Now I stay up and I wait here by the phone If you’re ready, all I mean is we could go”. Breaking a backbone is pretty hard unless you have lots of force and power, since your bones are strong.
But, glass on the other hand is pretty easy to break easier than actual bone. So, when Abram says her “backbone that was made of glass broke” she means it was easy to break. I absolutely love this song and its relatable lyrics.
Track 5, “us. (feat. Taylor Swift), is purposely on Track 5. Gracie has even said so herself. (interview and she was answering calls and stuff). Abrams and Swift posted a 10 second video of them putting the song “us.” together. In an interview with Genius she says “Um, and we had a really long dinner with like lengthy. Kind of juicy detailеd conversation. Um, and over the coursе of that conversation. We were like totally, beautifully over-served. Which allowed for such aggressive enthusiasm around, like
articulating those feelings ultimately in this song. We stayed up from, like, two a.m. to six a.m. writing this”. Swift and Abrams have such an amazing relationship. She performed with Swift twice on “ The Eras Tour”.
I think “us.” is a masterpiece and is definitely one of my favorites. It has two of my favorite artists in one song. The lyrics are genius. The bridge is one of the best on the album (in my opinion).
“That night, you were talkin’ false prophets and profits
They make in the margins of poetry sonnets
You never read up on it, shame, could’ve learned somethin’
Robert Bly on my nightstand, gifts from you, how ironic
The curse or a miracle, hearse or an oracle”
These women combined are such awesome lyricists.I just love Gracie Abrams. She’s one of my favorite artists and the way she interacts with her fans is awesome.
