A typical school day consists of math, english, science, history, PE (Physical Education), and a language. But are we really going to use any of the things we learn in these classes in the future?
Why are schools teaching us pointless things when we really should be learning how to take care of ourselves in the real world?
55 percent of seniors that graduate high school end up living with their parents for the first few years instead of starting a life of their own.
Firstly, we should be encouraged at school to look into different careers. Let’s say you take an elective, at most you can take four a year, unless your schedule gets changed.
Only exploring four careers out of the millions out there is not enough. Having a class where we get to do different things and see what jobs look like would really help us with actually having an idea of what we want to be when we grow up.
Additionally, we would know what we want to study in college, and be able to set goals for ourselves.
Another problem is simple tasks around the house like cleaning and folding laundry. Not only would this be useful for us to learn in schools, but it could be a fun class we look forward to during the day.
Keeping a clean house or apartment is essential, especially if you have a job or other obligations. Even folding laundry can be a useful skill to keep order while living alone.
Another problem is healthy eating habits. While takeout is delicious and convenient with busy schedules, it isn’t the best option. Learning how to cook nourishing meals should be a standard for schools to teach.
We need to learn how to take care of our bodies and stay healthy when we don’t have our parents to hold our hand every step of the way.
What about jobs? We all have dreams and goals for our future selves whether that be to live on the beach, own a bakery, be a singer or actor, or write for a famous newspaper.
Making money is another thing most adults struggle with.
Learning the material for a proper resume is key to getting a job. But the problem is, most high school students don’t know how to do this.
We need to learn how to get a job, keep it, and make money so we can sustain ourselves.
Speaking of making money, mindless spending is another problem. Instead of spending our money on new perfume or a video game, we should save for things like bills for cars and electricity.
Also everyday items like vacuums, food, furniture, bed sheets, etc. Young adults easily go broke within the first few months of living alone.
Basically, there are too many essential life skills we need to live alone. We’re never going to need to use the volume of a sphere formula or how many molecules there are in a drop of water in the real world.
High schools should have these life classes so as we graduate college, we are prepared for the road ahead.
