Throughout recent runway appearances and the release of movies inspired by icons of the 1960s, anyone can take notice of the approaching comeback of sixties style and pop culture.
When one thinks of this decade, what comes to mind may be pro-flower-power hippies wearing tie dye shirts and bell bottom jeans running rampant through Woodstock, but there is so much more than what meets the eye.
For example, throughout the early sixties the historical progress made for civil rights was unforgettable. The frontman of this movement was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) who led many peaceful protests and delivered significant speeches. His involvement in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Civil Rights Act, and Voting Rights Act all marked pivotal events of this time.
The progress made by MLK and his involvement with the NAACP played crucial roles in society and still does today.
Also, the increase of the United States’ extensive dropping of bombs throughout Vietnam and surrounding countries, 82,000 stationed soldiers, and overall involvement in the Vietnam war led to many national shifts in ways of life due to the lack of funding.
This immensely overboard and disappointing violence resulted in an uprising of folk music that promoted anti-war messages.
One legendary anti-war folk figure is Bob Dylan, who released his first album in 1962 and immediately took off with fame.
Now, with a movie about him, A Complete Unknown, we may see an increase in the appreciation of the style of the sixties.
Maybe with the emergence of features like those that Elle Fanning sported to the premiere of this film.
At this event, her look showcased iconic sixties-style pigtails, and of course an iconic beehive full of volume.
At the time of writing this, the film is not even released yet and users of TikTok have already been taking inspiration from Dylan’s style consisting of layering topped with a warm jacket.
In many videos creators reference Dylan’s iconic gait with both of their hands tucked into jacket pockets and long strides typically through cold weather.
Some examples include: “When the rain got the boys doing the Bob Dylan walk” and “When it’s too cold out so you hit the Bob Dylan”
To expand, another film based on the sparkle of the sixties was released earlier this year, further advertising this style.
One of the most influential films by Sofia Coppola, Priscilla, sparked the pattern of heightened recognition for vintage clothing pieces and accessories.
Furthermore, following the release of this film, many women on social media shared their tutorials for “beehive” hairdos and iconic mod eyeliner to create the appearance of large eyes as was popularized by Leslie Hornby, more widely known as Twiggy.
Another seeming trend set by the popular film was the resurgence of tall boots. Many variations of this elongated footwear have been sought after following the release.
Men’s and women’s style have all been impacted by the resurgence of this recognizable time period, bringing forth recycled fashion and style expansion.
