Flying cars, robots, space exploration, AI (Artificial Intelligence) companions and green technology have all been promising expectations for the year of 2025. Considering the year 2025 has already commenced it seems the expectations for this futuristic year have had a clash with reality. Movies set in the earlier years have predicted the expectations surrounding these futuristic themes.
The movie “Her”, a 2013 film based on the plot of a man losing his wife and finding companionship in an AI operated device, is set in the year of 2025.This film displays the possibilities demonstrated for the year 2025 and invites the idea of an AI operated site such as “ChatGPT”, that are programmed to make connections to humans rather than just provide data.
“The Lorax”, a 2012 film catered to the younger audience set in the year 2025 offers the prospect of green technology, eco-friendly cities and clean energy through a well crafted story line that informs and pulls at the heart strings of its audience by telling the tragic tale of a world devoid of nature.
This movie could be used as a cautionary tale considering we as a society are still advocating for a change in the climate and in the protection of our wild life, we have had expectations to have moved further along in the journey of finding solutions to these problems.
These expectations seem to be unrealistic considering 2025 has arrived and although we have made progress regarding renewable sources it seems we still have a long way to go to successfully decrease the hazardous nature of climate change.
The movie “Back to the Future Part ll” features flying cars and many other technological advancements that were set in 2025, considering this movie was made in 1989 and purely for viewers enjoyment it does not seem that far fetched if you account for all the advancements that have been made in these past few years.
There have been flying car prototypes but we have yet to launch a fully developed flying car that is fully functional.
“A Space Odyssey”, a film made in 1968 and set in 2025, gives us a glimpse into the future where we have permanently established our presence in space and travel between the different planets conducting everyday routines. This idea is not as far-fetched as some consider. We already conduct space exploration thanks to programs like NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), but the idea of space tourism is a little out there, considering the money that would have to be put in to conduct these, making them only reserved for the wealthiest of society.
Many predictions have been made about the expectations of 2025 especially with the advancements of technology but, the reality of these expectations is that they will take much longer than predicted.
It seems to be a common theme that the year 2025 has been branded as futuristic but we as a society are not fully developed or equipped to be able to reach the level of success in the age of technology that others have expected.
