The release of the show “Squid Game” has caused many people to want to try and play the Korean childhood games in many parts of the world. With that, our Los Osos school clubs, Asian Student Union (ASU) and Korean Culture Club (KCC), along with Etiwanda High School ASU, decided to collaborate to make this dream come true for the Los Osos students.
The set up consisted of two meetings. One was a regular meeting after school where students got to try games like ddakji, gonggi, and dalgona, and then a bonder on a Saturday that was a mixture of all types of games from season one and two.
The bonder took place on January 14, it was the first meeting back from both clubs in 2025, making it special that it was a joint meeting. The meeting consisted of their announcement of the bonder for that upcoming Saturday, stating that there would be a cash prize, exciting many students.
As stated above, that club meeting consisted of the games of ddakji, gonggi, and dalgona, taught by different advisors within both clubs. Ddakji is a game where you have a folded square piece of paper, one on the floor and one on your hand. The goal of the game is to aim it at the paper on the floor and slap it while managing to flip it. Gonggi is a game where you toss stone-like objects and have to catch them as you grab the remaining pieces that are on the floor. Dalgona, the most famous, is a cookie with a shape that you have to try to cut out without breaking the shape.
With those three games, many people were able to have fun and look forward to Saturday.
When the bonder finally rolled around on Saturday, everyone shuffled in looking forward to start the festivities. The first game was going to be Red Light, Green Light, straight from the show.
One of the KCC officers was able to dress like the Doll from the show to make sure it was accurate. Other officers from the show dressed like the guards by wearing red shirts.
During Red Light, Green Light a few people were eliminated from the game. After Red Light, Green Light, we let the contestants rest for a bit and eat some pizza.
Then it was time for the five legged pentathlon, where we tied together groups of four people by the legs. They had to walk in uniform fashion to each station which consisted of Gonggi, Jeqi, flying stone, and lastly rock paper scissors in that order. Only two teams out of four were eliminated.
After the five legged pentathlon, the next game was mingle, where contestants had to walk around in a circle to the theme of music before a number was called out. Then the contestants were supposed to run to an officer outside the ring with that number of people, if they didn’t they were eliminated.
The game which occurred after that was dalgona. This game gave the contestants a break to go and enjoy a delicious cookie. Only a few people were eliminated.
The second to last game was the glass bridge from “Squid Game Season 1”, but instead of glass there were boxes. All but three players got eliminated, leading us to the final game of “Squid Game”, squid game.
In this game, the three contestants had balloons tied to their back and were given sticks. The goal was to pop each other’s balloons, which was a lot safer than having to kill the opponent like in the show.
The last person standing would get the grand prize of 50 thousand Korean Won and 20 dollars.
At the end of the day all the festivities were over and it was a successful bonder that celebrated the release of a highly acclaimed show which uplifted Asian communities.
