Every year on the second Sunday of May, people all around the world take the day to honor one of the most important figures in our lives; our moms.
Whether it’s through a sweet message or a heartfelt gift, this special day is a chance to show our gratitude for all of the sacrifices our moms have made for us.
Mother’s Day is not just for moms, but for any women who have played an important role in our lives, like grandmas, aunts, cousins, and even teachers.
Celebrating motherhood has existed for centuries, but it didn’t become an official holiday until 1908.
In 1870, an activist by the name of Julia Ward Howe called for a “Mother’s Day” to promote peace, but it didn’t get any attention.
Another activist at the time, Ann Jarvis, loved the idea and worked with Julia to create Mothers Day clubs.
Her daughter, Anna Jarvis, deeply admired her mothers work and always knew she wanted to do something similar in the future.
After her mother’s death in 1905, Jarvis made a promise to herself that she would create a day dedicated to celebrating mothers around the world.
She added on to her mother’s accomplishments and created more Mother’s Day Clubs across the US.
Jarvis even convinced some of her local churches to have a specific mass monthly just for honoring all mother figures.
Over time, many people started latching onto the idea and worked with Anna to increase the holiday’s popularity.
In 1908, Anna, with the help of other activists, created an official Mother’s Day festival in her mom’s hometown of Grafton, West Virginia.
The celebration expanded across almost all the U.S. states. It was such a big event, it even ended up getting the president’s attention.
The president at the time, Woodrow Wilson, loved the idea and proclaimed it a national holiday in 1914.
Mother’s Day actually led to Father’s Day becoming an official holiday too. After a few years of celebrating it, people realized they needed to have a celebration for fathers too.
It did take a while, but finally President Lyndon B. Johnson issued Father’s Day a national holiday in 1972.
While Mother’s Day might not be one of those big holidays like Halloween or Christmas, it’s still important to celebrate it with your family and close friends.
Our mothers have had such a big impact on our lives, from birth all the way to now. If you think about it, we wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for our moms.
They have taken care of you since the moment you were born; feeding you, helping you with homework, giving you a safe environment to live in, and just about everything in between.
I don’t think people realize how underappreciated your mom is and how many things she does for you that often goes unnoticed.
Even if it might not seem like it, just giving your mom a flower on Mother’s Day could mean the world to her.
So this year on May 11th, give your mom some extra love and show her how much you appreciate her.
