On August 15th, Rolling Stone interviewed Steve Lacy to discuss his upcoming album. The album is called “Oh Yeah?”. Ever since his last album “Gemini Rights” he has been creating this new chapter of music in Paris.
Shortly after Lacy released “Gemini Rights,” he got right back in the studio and started working on making more music.
He stated, “The vibes for this new album is me”. He mentioned that he has a multitude of different types of beats and new feelings in each song.
Lacy said, “The new album will be more vulnerable and a lot more honest than any other. The lyrics and songs themselves are going to be funny. Then have a line right after a joke that’ll make you want to cry.”
He had felt his fans didn’t appreciate “Gemini Rights” as much as they should have, or for as long as they should have. The fans just wanted more and more from Steve.
Personally, I feel it’s going to be different from any other music he has made.
The song he released, “Nice Shoes” is very different from any of his other music. I really liked the beat and the different types of sounds it had.
The last minute of the song was my favorite part.
Around the middle of the song, the whole vibe of the song changes back towards his old style. It reminded me of “Playground” from the album “Apollo XXI”. It also made me think of two of his most popular songs, “Bad Habits” and “Infrunami”.
When the beat switches over in “Nice Shoes” it makes you think of the older Steve. He is exploring new vibes yet still blending pieces of his older self.
Yet when it got to the end, it changed back to how the song was at the start.
The difference, even in his lyrics from past albums, send you on a roller coaster of emotions. One line that stuck out to me from “Nice Shoes” was “I can’t seem to fall in love, it’s bad luck”. It spoke to me because the majority of his lyrics he would be singing about are being in love.
From the song “Infrunami” the first line is “Girl, you’re the one I want, you’re the one I need”. That song is from the album “The Lo-Fis” which came out in 2020. He is giving us the story of what has happened to him over the past 5 years. All that has changed for him.
No matter how it sounds, it will be popular since people have such diverse tastes in music.
Senior Lily Alavrez said, “I liked the ending of the song. I am excited for the new album. He hasn’t released anything that I genuinely haven’t liked.”
Her words sum up the excitement other fans are feeling. We are all ready for the album to come out.
As fans wait, we can see that Lacy is entering a new era of music and lyrics, yet still keeping his own style and reminding us why we fell in love with his music.
