At the 77th Emmy Awards, Owen Cooper had lived his dream of becoming one of the youngest Emmy winners in history. For only being 15 years old, Cooper was announced as the best supporting actor in a limited series or movie for his portrayal in the Netflix series “Adolescence.”
“Adolescence” is a story about how a family’s world can change when their troubled 13-year-old schoolboy, Jamie Miller, is arrested and accused of murdering a fellow female classmate. Introducing a story that was portrayed to almost feel like real-time with the characters, allowing viewers to feel as if they are a part of the mystery being created.
Throughout his acceptance speech, Cooper spoke to the audience about having to listen, focus, and get out of one’s comfort zone, as it will allow one to achieve anything in life. Additionally, he said during his speech, “Who cares if you get embarrassed? Anything can be possible. I was nothing about three years ago, I’m here now.”
Now, with Coppers‘ recent win, he broke the previous record that Scott Jacoby held for his role in “That Certain Summer” in 1973, in which Jacoby won the Primetime Emmy at the age of 16. On the other hand, Roxana Zal remains the youngest winner in the end. She had received an Emmy at 14 years old for her role in Something About Amelia in 1984.
However, even with Cooper’s award and recognition, the series itself was acknowledged for its intricate approach to filming each of its four episodes, as they were all filmed within a single shot.
This adds to Cooper’s ability and skill within the industry, for being able to act for long periods of time without a single error, allowing viewers to be awed at the dedication that he and fellow coworkers had placed upon themselves to know the lines and not run into any errors.
Additionally, because Cooper was 14 years old when filming “Adolescence” and portraying a 13-year-old in the show, this spotlights a main issue in the movie industry. Due to this performance by Cooper, the stereotypical idea of younger characters being played by actors twice the age can start to end.
Cooper has shown everyone that even young children and teens similar to the age of the character can be the right fit, with their drive and passion to make the character feel real. The industry may start to realize that casting should be considered differently.
Owen Cooper is a well-deserved actor, and his performance throughout the show solidifies that, with everyone eagerly waiting to see Cooper’s next film.
