As the Christmas season approaches—and with that the long-awaited two-week break–much anticipation grows for the coming traditions of hanging Christmas lights, Christmas trees, watching movies such as Home Alone and Elf, and spending time with their family. On the Los Osos campus,
On Friday, December 12, 2025, Los Osos High School will be hosting its annual concert, Wassail, to make way for the holiday season. Featuring the Choir, Band, and Orchestra Departments, they will be performing from 7:00-9:30 PM in the theatre.
The day before the Wassail Concert, the Jazz Concert will be held on Thursday, December 11.
Directed by Steve Krumbine and Stevie Leyton, the musicians and singers will be performing various songs and compositions to make way for the Christmas season. Marcus Cheong, a tuba player on the Band, said that “concert band [will be] playing songs like Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in a compilation called Holiday Favorites, as well as independent pieces like Sleigh Ride and the theme from Elf.”
Some selections will be covered by the Band Department, and/or Choir, and Orchestra throughout the charts they perform, such as Holly Jolly Celebration.
For this year’s Wassail concert, however, Mr. Krumbine has revealed that this year’s concert will be unique.
“The only part of this concert that’s going to be different is the ending. This year, we’re going to have everybody out on stage at the end of the concert. All of the bands, the orchestra, and the choir.”
For the performance of the concert’s final song, Sleigh Ride, all of the Band, Orchestra, and Choir members will come together for the concert’s grand finale. Originally composed by Leroy Anderson in 1946 and covered by the Ronettes in 1963, this song has become a classic, true to the Christmas spirit–perfect for the 2025 Wassail Concert’s closure.
As wonderful and fun as the concert is, it has not come without its challenges. The students and instructors have overcome various challenges together, putting together the event. Mr. Krumbine testified, “So far our only real problem has been time. With how late in the year that marching band goes, we’re only left with around a week and a half to prepare for Wassail.”
With the delay of the marching band performance, there has been a lot of stress to catch up and prepare for the concert. Marcus Cheong said, “It’s always a stress to get the concert prepared since we’re always so limited on time, but the Wassail concert is always a highlight of the year…I love Wassail.”
Though the concert preparation has brought a lot of stress, however, it has also brought a lot of excitement for those involved. The Wassail Concert celebrates the arrival of the Christmas season and the joys and warm memories it brings to mind. In the musical aspect, it unifies the departments together to work on an exciting performance. Marcus said, “[the concert] really kicks off the Christmas season for us, so…Wassail’s kinda like the marker for when Christmas starts for us…that’s what I’m most excited for, mainly.”
So, with the end of the year approaching and Christmas arriving once more, the Band, Orchestra, and Choir departments are excited to put on this wonderful annual concert for you to attend. Swing by on Friday night, buy a cookie or two, and enjoy the show!
