Wrestling season is just around the corner, and the anticipation is only growing—Los Osos’s wrestling team is gearing up for yet another exceptional season! With returning CIF champions and a new set of wrestlers ready to prove themselves, this year promises to be one of both growth and willpower.
Recently, both the boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams have been practicing at various locations, facing their fearsome opponents as they prepare for the upcoming scrimmages in December. These duels include opponents with familiar names, such as Los Osos vs. Etiwanda, Los Osos vs. Chino Hills, and Los Osos vs. Rancho, among others, as December approaches.
Senior Wrestler Madison Forester firmly believes that the upcoming season will be greater than the last and that the teams are well prepared for the season.
“Yes, it will be better because we’ve been practicing all year round,” she added, “Yes, because we got a lot of new girls this season.”
Forester, like all the other girls, has been practicing since the summer, trying her hardest to meet Coach Brehmeyer’s expectations. Both the boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams this year have proven to be exceptional, with multiple returning CIF champions and dozens of new wrestlers who are willing to do whatever it takes to win.
Although Wrestling is a one-on-one sport, it requires a lot of sportsmanship, effort, and determination to come out on top. Wrestling is known to be a rigorous sport, one that demands both physical and mental strength, as well as pure resolve. However, the challenges of wrestling have never been quite as great a challenge for our LOHS Wrestlers, since they have proven time and time again that they have what it takes.
With every wrestler comes a different story, a different mindset, and different goals. Each of them is willing to perform admirably, engage with sportsmanship, and wrestle with honor.
Taking into account that the LOHS Girls’ Wrestling team is a 23’ and 24’ Baseline League Champion, and with the Boys’ Wrestling team being a four-time League Champion, it doesn’t hurt to say that this upcoming season promises much more than we could ever possibly expect. As both teams boom with school spirit and pride, the LOHS Wrestling Teams are ready to get back in action.
With the returning CIF champions and a fresh set of wrestlers, the Wrestling team is ready to prove that their training has paid off. As December approaches, the wrestling team will be making a flashy appearance, trying their very hardest, and working towards victory.
Despite all the wrestlers this year being admirably athletic and skilled, one has caught the eye of Captain Russell Johl of the boys’ wrestling team.
“Maxwell Matito really shines out as a wrestler because he puts in a lot of hard work,” Joel said.
Maxwell, when asked about his techniques and goals, responded, “At the moment, the techniques I’m working on the most are tilts and low singles. My personal goals are to qualify for CIF and potentially the masters. For the team, I hope we can be league champs.”
Maxwell’s goals resonate throughout the entire wrestling team, with every one of them wondering, “Can we become league champions this year?”
To that, returning Senior CIF Champion Mackenzie Matthews responds, “As long as we keep putting in hard work, then yes, we will be prepared, and as long as support exists.”
Since the beginning of June, both the boys and girls wrestling teams have been giving it their all, attending multiple scrimmages and displaying true school spirit. While wrestling may seem like a quiet and small sport, it requires a lot of willpower, determination, strength, and mental endurance. Becoming a wrestler is not an easy task, but with the guidance of Captain Johl, fellow peers, and Coach Brehmeyer, anything can become a reality.
As for the coach, Coach Brehmeyer stated, “Returning CIF champion Mackenzie Matthews, Kayla Albania, Sage Patel, and Morgan Johl were all promising players. Moreover, this year’s girls wrestling team is to have fifteen new wrestlers, an encouraging start for the girls wrestling team, as this gives a wave of new talent.”
The LOHS Wrestling team’s hard work does not go unnoticed. No matter what happens, the student body will always be there, supporting the team’s outcomes, whether it’s victories or losses. Even if we lose 50 times, our support for the team will not be in vain, because the one thing that the team needs from us is our unwavering support and motivation.
Additionally, Coach Brehmeyer described the boys who displayed promising results.
He listed, “CIF player Izzy, Russell Johl, and Maxwell Matito were all incredibly talented. Moreover, they place high hopes for the upcoming season to come, as their raw talent is noticed by so many.”
With so many young and talented wrestlers, both the boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams have proven themselves as exemplary wrestlers and athletes overall, promising a season of victory and hope.
