On November 7, around 11 p.m., Anna Kepner died on a Carnival cruise ship, travelling from Miami, Florida. She was travelling with her family and was a high school student of Central Florida, set to graduate this year.
In the days since her death, there has been a lot of speculation and investigation regarding the true perpetrator in the case, as well as how Kepner died. The current cause of death was reported as “mechanical asphyxiation,” another person physically blocked her airway, suffocating the teen. Given these details, the case was also ruled a homicide case.
A major suspect in the case is Kepner’s 16-year-old step-brother, whose name has not yet been reported. He was deemed so on December 5, 2025, when a judge released a statement to the public.
On the same day, Kepner’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, and Hudson’s ex-husband, Thomas Hudson, took the stand, facing custody issues regarding their son.
The night of her death, in early November, Kepner was reportedly spending time with her grandparents in the ship’s casino. Emotions were light, and the mood was festive. The family was just enjoying their journey out at sea.
However, their vacation took a drastic turn when Kepner was found dead in her room, stuffed under a bed, wrapped in blankets and sleeping bags. She shared the room with two other teenagers, one of whom was her stepbrother.
Given his close proximity to her, he immediately held her in high suspicion. Both teens who shared the room with Kepner were questioned regarding their involvement in the scene, and investigations are still active.
Given where the body was found, hidden and concealed from the outside world, officials were immediately concerned by the details of the case. “The concealment part alone is very troubling,” said Chief Medical Examiner Stephen Nelson, who is based in Central Florida. He added, “If (drug screenings) are clean and she’s not overdosed, then you know it would be clearly a homicide.” Given her body’s concealment, these factors ultimately led to the case being ruled as a homicide.
The investigation is still active as authorities work swiftly to discover more details regarding the case and determine an ultimate perpetrator.
In recent years, cruise ships have been said to be landscapes that hide cruelty and crime. In quarterly reports, many cruise lines disclose happenings of sexual assault and harassment every time. While Kepner’s case does not have any evidence of rape connected with her murder, it is obvious she was still subject to the prison of a harsh environment.
With people, customers, drunk on alcohol and release, it is extremely easy for these ships to collapse into a cesspool of danger, partying on open water.
“Cruise ships should absolutely implement safe guidelines, in fact, I’m surprised they don’t already. People who go on cruises wish to enjoy a vacation of some kind, to relax,” said Sophomore Amanda Lee. “The hosts, the cruise lines, should be responsible for allowing their guests to enjoy their time – not worry about being attacked left and right.”
Senior Evynn Domenech agreed, and said, “Yes, because a cruise is something people look forward to, as a way to escape from their problems. They don’t want to have to worry about other problems while being on vacation.”
Both students had similar opinions, as both said cruise ships should implement more safe guidelines to prevent deaths and sexual assault cases in the future.
Anna Kepner and her family were prepared to have the time of their lives, ready to relax and have fun on their cruise. However, when tragedy struck, those carefree aspirations disappeared. While Kepner’s stepbrother is a main suspect in the case, it is still amazingly horrible for any family to be marred with death of a family member, especially while travelling.
Kepner’s father, Christopher Kepner, made a comment regarding the step-brother’s potential involvement in the case, expressing his intense shock: “He was a normal kid,” he said to People Magazine. “And I would’ve never thought that any of this would’ve happened.”
As the family deals with the shock, devastation, and anger regarding Kepner’s death, authorities work tirelessly to piece together a puzzle of mystery, deceit, death, and speculation.
