If you own TikTok, you know different trends come and go. Some originated from decades ago and became popular for a while again. Like when Stranger Things season 4 came out, 80s style fashion was very popular throughout 2020 to 2021.
From late 2023 till now, the idea of y2k fashion has come back, mainly through the spread of TikTok. Looking back at very popular 2000s celebrities like Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, and so on, has helped inspire many people to follow their styles.
The fashion of y2k, according to Good Housekeeping, consists of “scarf tops, boot cut jeans, velour tracksuits, pastels, metallics, cowl necks, pedal pushers, and showy accessories, from furry bucket hats and trucker caps to bowling bags and butterfly clips.”
This also means that certain brands are associated with the aesthetic. Juicy Couture, Apple Bottom, Miss Me, Baby Phat, and Victoria’s Secret are some of the popular brands associated with the 2000s era.
Those brands are known as the most legendary brands from the 2000s that helped highlight the difference of the new emerged style.
Fast fashion was enormously introduced during this period of time. Clothing from all those brands became normalized and in such high demand that those brands resulted in fast fashion in order to mass produce and sell as much as possible. That shows the high demand was extreme due to the impact of the fashion style.
One way that the style has become popular is through TikTokers and Youtubers who wear y2k inspired outfits. The most popular currently, is Tara Yummy, who has expressed her love for the style. Having a large fanbase as hers helps spread the fashion more as it Yummy makes it look very fun and cool to wear.
Besides the clothes, there is something else calling back, the music! Many gen z groups listen to 2000s and 2010s songs they know from games like Just Dance, or from the radio. From rap to pop, the music was undeniably good and catchy.
Singers like Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne, and Nelly Furtado are very well known during that time period. Rappers Like Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, or Snoop Dog are vastly known and also have a huge impact.
Many of the artists listed —and obviously many others who weren’t listed— helped with the progress of music that led to the revival of indie rock music.
Using applications like MySpace, LiveJournal, Xanga, Kazaa, the style and culture of the 2000s rapidly spread, contributing to globalization, which allowed people to communicate with others around the world.
There are a variety of things that define the ‘aesthetic’ of the 2000s that our generations look back on. Fashion, music, and lifestyles have impacted the world and societies without us even realizing it. The comeback of such times allows many people to express how they feel in a fun and unique way, using the previous decades as inspiration.
So far in TikTok, it looks like 2016 might be making a comeback but it will definitely not replace the 2000s.
