For over one hundred years, the art of film has changed and impacted culture all around. In December of 1895, two French men, Auguste and Louis Lumière, combined technology and art that influenced the creation of film. They introduced the Cinématographe, which was a projector that only showed 16 frames per second.
Between 1890-1927, hundreds of silent films were made, showing improved ability of technology and creativity of storytelling.
Entering into the 19th century, A Visit to the Seaside, an eight minute long British short film, the first ever colored silent film, was created and released. The film used the Kinemacolor process to capture seafront shots.
As technology began to greatly improve, so did the art of film. Ideas were spreading and brains were coming together to develop innovative ideas. In 1927, film would be forever changed by an American musical film. The Jazz Singer was the first ever film with synchronized dialogue. This film began the era of talking in film which is famously named “talkies.”
Throughout the decades the history of movies and film production has transformed into an incredible way of entertainment, awareness, and way of expression for millions.
Film and film production is bringing art to a screen for mass amounts of people to watch together. It is a movement of creative thinking, raw storytelling, and watching.
Warner Bros., 20th Century Studios, Paramount Pictures, The Walt Disney Company, Sony Pictures, Lionsgate, and Universal Studios are some of the most popular and critically acclaimed film studios not only in America, but the world.
Many of those film production companies have been around for over 100 years. These companies have shaped film into what is today and have held a heavy cultural impact as well.
Authentic art on screen has been the standard for centuries, until it hasn’t.
Many might agree or disagree, but movies and films have been losing their spark. Ideas are running dry and originality is scarce. Remakes, over-making movie trilogies, and extremely bad use of AI writing scripts have been poisoning the film industries recently.
Original thoughts and writing have become rare and it’s disappointing. When people watch movies, they want to see stories they have never heard or seen before. They should want to immerse themselves in a world that is foreign and strange to get away from the pressures of their reality.
Movies should make people laugh, cry, smile, emphasize and feel with the art that is shown on screen. Film allows people to feel vulnerability and connect with strangers in a dark room for just a moment. That is what is so beautiful about film and why it needs originality and creativity.
People are hungry for the new and oddness that is in film production. Now, a large part of this problem does stem from there being not as talented writers as there should be that work for these film companies.
There is one film production company that seems to be on the right track of new ideas of storytelling: A24. One of the newer and younger film companies, A24 was founded on August 20, 2012 in New York by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges.
A24 over the last 12 years have made and produced a bit over 149 films. Their genres vary from thrillers, mystery, psychological horror, suspense, drama, indie film, horror, LGBTQ and so much more.
The film company is most known for their strange, unsettling, and heart wrenching take on stories such as, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Midsommar,” “Hereditary,” “Pearl,” “X,” “Maxxine,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” “The Front Room,” “Moonlight,” “Iron Claw,” and “Talk To Me.”
Their newer movies coming out soon consist of, “Queer,” “Y2K,” “Heretic,” “Babygirl,” “The Brutalist,” and much more.
Many of their movies are unique and they have their own way of creating their art in film. You can see in many of their productions they have that authentic and raw portrayal that is not only in the writing, but in the acting as well. Their films have raved among millions.
Many people seek to watch A24 films because they have been noted to take a different route from the basic and stereotypical Hollywood style movies. Their movies make you think and want to understand the art. Their movies are also for entertainment and emotional enjoyment. Their movies also inspire you to feel.
As of 2023, A24 has made 138.14 million dollars (U.S.). A24 movies have gained much popularity among Generation X, mainly because of the company’s smart tactics.
A24 is known for having insanely good marketing, as their movies are mainly mainstream to the younger generation. They have exceptional filmmakers in their movies as well as great actors and they give face to new ones as well. People love the idea that A24 defies the typical movie making standard.
A24 is not perfect, but their films are changing the criteria and are welcoming new minds and thoughts. A24 is paving the way for the future of cinematography.
