It’s winter. It’s when days get shorter, the weather gets colder, and people’s moods begin to drop, especially high school students.
Osos is a very prominent school when it comes to treating mental health and provides a variety of resources to students.
One valuable resource that students can use is the wellness center. The wellness center is in room D15. This is a room where anyone can go when they are having a rough day, struggling, need someone to talk to, or just simply need a break.
When you step into this room, you’ll be greeted with a student counselor and an adult counselor. You have the option to speak with them or not.
If you’re the type that needs to get everything off of your chest, they are the people to go to. If you’d rather stay quiet and regain your peace, that’s available to you as well. You are free to go at any time during school hours.
When you go in, there is a computer at the corner of the room where you sign in online to ensure that your teacher for the class you would be in doesn’t mark you absent. After that, you have a few options.
There are many beds, couches, and chairs to sit at. In one corner, there are miniature zen gardens at a table to fiddle with, along with stress toys.
In another, there are art supplies such as crayons, markers, and paper. They even have a bucket of bracelets and beads to make your own!
The wellness center here at LOHS is an amazing place for students to utilize.
Our counselors are very understanding and good at what they do. They are all here for a reason and we, as a student body, should be grateful for them and take advantage of the blessing.
Not many schools receive places like this to go to when having an off day or in case you need some extra help.
The wellness center should really get more recognition across all school boards. It would be sensational if this could get out to more schools and if they could apply it in some way to their curriculum.
Students do a lot. High school can be stressful and a workload. It’s easy for anybody to get caught up and feel overwhelmed. Especially the student athletes and kids who do extracurricular activities like band, school clubs, etc. Teenagers are still developing mentally and it’s understandable to feel drained, or just simply not feel well. Every emotion is valid and I think it’s important that schools value that.
The Los Osos wellness center is such a privilege to have here on campus. It’s a way for struggling students to just take a break and relax for some time if needed, without getting in trouble.
If you feel like you have nowhere else to go during school, or just feel like you need a little help to get through the day, the wellness center is always there and is the perfect place to go.
