The school lunches offered at Los Osos High School, in all honesty, are decent. They are usually serving a regular selection everyday with occasional variations. The selection of fruit or veggie is a great addition to any entree option. However, there is something that must be addressed.
One of these occasional variations is a favorite amongst the student body- the chicken and rice burrito.
Throughout the past couple of years, and the first few weeks of this school year, this lunch option was a regular occurrence, did not vary, and was my personal everyday option.
But, one day something changed. Staff at LOHS made the chicken and rice burrito an option only on Mondays, if they are still available when you get to them.
One fellow chicken and rice burrito fan, Junior Vivianne Diaz, has the same concern.
Diaz states, “It is honestly devastating and it ruins my day when I get so excited to eat my chicken burrito but I realize it is a Tuesday and not a Monday”
Her passion regarding the loss is only one example of many other enthusiastic students grieving the chicken and rice burrito.
“They should bring it back full time since they are so delicious and make my day. It used to be the reason why I showed up to school. Now that it is gone, I don’t want to come,” Diaz says.
The replacement of the chicken and rice burritos on Tuesdays through Fridays is a variation of other burritos including: chili cheese fry burrito, pork chili verde with rice burrito, beef combination burrito, and a cheesy beef burrito, partnered with the daily bean and cheese.
These options just do not live up to the standard set by the treasured chicken and rice. The bean and cheese is too plain. The chili fry is unconventional. The pork, yet similar to the chicken and rice, just is not the same. And finally, the beef combination and cheesy beef are too similar to each other.
Now, you may be asking: Are these burritos really worth this recognition? The answer is yes. Compared to the other options especially, the prized chicken and rice burrito has the perfect rice to chicken ratio and can even be enjoyed without the tortilla with the use of a fork.
To expand, this is not the only lunch item that has been taken from the population of Osos. We must highlight the absence of the chili topping in the nacho lines. Where did it go?
Outrage was sparked by the mention of this topic in my class. We miss the chili!
Having a chili cheese fry burrito is insulting to the chili nacho lovers and the chicken and rice burrito lovers.
All in all, with the decrease of chicken and rice burritos, the demand increases. This goes hand in hand with any lunchtime fan favorite. I, as well as many peers, hope to one day see the chicken and rice burrito return to the daily menu.
