Former and longest standing My Chemical Romance (MCR) drummer Bob Bryar has passed away at the age of 44. While the reasoning and cause of his death is unknown at this time, no foul play is suspected.
Law enforcement reported to TMZ that Bryar’s possessions, music equipment, and weapons were left untouched. The official cause of death is under investigation.
Fans have many speculations. Some assume he had died by suicide, others speculate a drug overdose of some sort. Possible underlying health conditions are also a possibility.
Bryar was found dead in his Tennessee home on November 27, 2024. He was last seen alive on November 4, 2024. Animal Control was called after Bryar’s badly decomposed body was found and took two dogs into custody.
Shortly after news broke of Bryar’s death, fellow MCR members Mikey Way and Frank Iero made posts on social media. Shortly after that, MCR made a post on Instagram bidding farewell to their former bandmate.
The band’s statement was short, stating ,“It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Bob Bryar, our former bandmate and an important part of the history of My Chemical Romance. We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family at this time. May he rest in peace.”
Way had made a post on his Instagram story in regards to Bryar’s death, which was soon removed due to Instagram’s stories only lasting 24 hours.
Iero had made a post on Instagram that was five pages long in regards to Bryar’s death, recounting their friendly relationship throughout the years. The post has since been deleted.
No posts were made on other social media platforms from any other member. Ray Toro and Gerard Way do not have social media, so they have not publicly spoken on the matter.
On November 30, 2024, Rolling Stone reported that a spokesperson for MCR made a statement that read, “The band asks for your patience and understanding as they process the news of Bob’s passing.”
Fans have many mixed views and emotions on the passing of the former drummer. Many have celebrated his death, others were very sad, and some are indifferent, or even in shock.
The mixed emotions stem from how problematic Bryar was. While in the band, Bryar had been incredibly rude and bullied Way to a point of Way considering departing from the band.
Furthermore, Bryar has been known to say very offensive and problematic things online, especially on X. His profile consists of his photo being a picture of him in a “Make America Great Again” hat.
Many fans find this problematic, as it appears that Bryar’s political views contradicted their own as well as the image the band had portrayed for years.
Fans do not speculate on a change in the band’s upcoming tour, as Bryar has not been with the band since 2014. Fans also wish the best for the members and Bryar’s family, despite the mixed emotions.
