As Los Osos High School inhabited their first boys volleyball team in just 2023, it has now become one of the more exciting sports for our fellow grizzlies to watch.
And over those years, our boys volleyball boys have produced young men who are driven and determined every season to do their best on the court.
A big part of the sport is having passion so getting a grasp on what made the team fall in love with volleyball is something important.
Senior Captain Libero Jace Vallejo said, “I saw a group of people playing at the beach and was very intrigued. After that I tried it out with my friends and we became hooked”.
Being captain is a very big role and utilizing the lessons that have been learned over time to prospective teammates is what will make this team thrive on their season.
When asked about his journey with the team so far Vallejo said, “I’ve loved my team every year I’ve been here, but this year’s team is special to me. I have so many underclassmen that I’m able to take under my wing and support.”
But again, being an athlete and balancing out school is tedious work for anyone.
Senior Outside Hitter Drayson Lopez said, “I’m mindful of keeping my life balanced, so I try my best to stay on top of both my athletic commitments and my academic commitments and make time for both, as well as having a social life.”
Volleyball has a lot to do with trust, trusting your team that you can surpass any obstacles together but also trusting your instincts to make the right decisions to score a point for every set played.
Lopez says, “My support on and off the court is trying my best to understand every individual person’s situation. Connecting to your teammates and finding out their personalities, allows for a better connection on and off the court”.
In high school sports, there is always a high chance of issues amongst players and giving them time to bond with each other as a team is one of the key gateways to success. Allowing for not only open communication but being able to inspire and learn from each other is what makes a team a strong one.
Which is exactly what our LOHS Boys volleyball team does as Vallejo said, “We like to have fun, our team is built on jokes and laughs. Before games it’s fun to see smiles on everyone’s faces and how the mood transfers onto the court. We have a full team this year with no holes, so I think with the chemistry that we all have together, we will be able to do very well this season”.
As someone who watched the very first boys volleyball game and was in the stands to how it is now, not only has this program improved in their ways in coaching but just the overall cohesiveness as a team is what makes the overall differences in actions.
Goal setting is a very big thing that I think every athlete should take on.
When asked about what his own personal goals for the season are, Lopez said, “My personal goals for this season are to be a confident player on the court, prove other schools expectations of Osos wrong and put in the work. The team goals are definitely to have fun and make CIF.”
Lopez continues, “I’m most excited about the games against Etiwanda and Rancho as I get to play my last year against friends I started out playing volleyball with”
Make sure to follow up on our beloved Boys Volleyball team, we cannot wait to see what they have in store for us this season. Claws up!
