The Chinese Culture Club (CCC) has recently been started at our very own high school, joining a variety of culture clubs that are already on campus.
The CCC meets every second Friday of the month in room C–54, Señor Useda’s room.
The Chinese Culture Club was started earlier this year by sophomore Athena Shen, sophomore Donna Kim, sophomore Kelly Cao, sophomore Etan Suvunnapaph, and junior Reagan Li.
According to co-president Athena Shen, the Chinese Culture Club was “created to make a comfortable place for everyone and to help people learn about Chinese culture”.
Co-president Donna Kim states that the founders of the CCC “noticed that there hadn’t been a Chinese Culture Club created yet, so [they] wanted to spread what Chinese culture is and what it means”.
All of the founders of this club are deeply devoted to sharing Chinese culture to fellow students on campus, and while fostering a safe space where one can connect with others.
So far, the CCC has had two successful meetings, and has participated in a variety of Chinese crafts and activities, including cardmaking, watching a c-drama, and introducing and explaining a Chinese holiday.
They are even currently planning a partnership with the Diversify Our Narrative club to help include Chinese cultures in literature and the stories that are read.
The CCC’s future goals and missions include expanding the club, helping people feel more welcome on campus, and hosting more events that have to do with Chinese holidays.
They would like to have “more collaborations with other clubs as well as possible outside companies”, stated Kim.
People should join the CCC to learn true Chinese culture that is represented by the people who live with the culture everyday themselves. Learning other cultures “gives people the chance to look at the heritage through a non-stereotypical and raw lens”, said Kim.
In addition, the Chinese Culture Club would like everyone to know that being Chinese is not required to join!
“CCC is for everyone, Chinese or not! It’s an amazing opportunity to expand your perspective and delve into what another culture means”, said Kim.
Like other cultural clubs on campus, the CCC is not created to be exclusive to only people of that culture. The purpose of a cultural club is to help others learn about the culture.
Joining any culture club is a great way to build connections with a diverse group of people that you may not have met otherwise. Joining a culture club can also help break down cultural barriers and truly understand, learn, and embrace new ideas.
Overall, we are so proud of all of our culture clubs here on campus, and we welcome the new Chinese Culture Club into our community of culture clubs. We wish the CCC the best of luck for the rest of the year and next year, and are looking forward to seeing what the Chinese Culture Club has to offer!
