As of August and onwards, “Roblox”, the popular children’s game, has been involved in multiple lawsuits and controversies regarding how it deals with the online safety of children. From suing a YouTuber to getting sued by an entire state, the online safety of children and users is at stake. However, what are the events that led up to this?
A YouTuber by the name of “Schelp” often posts videos of himself going on Roblox and exposing groomers and predators, helping spread awareness not only to kids, but Roblox itself. “The reason I caught predators is because I was groomed on Roblox as a kid,” Schlep tweeted recently, “I never want to see kids go through what I went through.”
However, as of Aug. 9, Schlep posted multiple tweets, explaining how all of his Roblox accounts have been banned and Roblox even sent him a cease and desist, threatening to sue Schlep for defamation because the predator-catching content he made was “unauthorized and harmful to the game.”
After tweeting the full letter, Schlep’s post gained nearly 10,000 likes within the first couple of days. Additionally, he made a YouTube video explaining his point of view that “Roblox is suing me for protecting kids.” He also made it a point to speak up about his attempt to get Roblox’s attention concerning all the pedophilia occurring on the app, but this was to no avail, as Roblox has yet to respond.
After Schlep posted the YouTube video, many people, fans of Schlep or not, gathered to support him, using tags like “#freeschlep”. In an attempt to get his Roblox accounts unbanned. However, he has come out and said he has no intention of ever coming back to Roblox and will no longer visit the site.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, a petition for the resignation of Roblox CEO David Baszucki has started, amassing over 200,000 signatures.
Meanwhile, as of Aug. 14, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murril filed a lawsuit against Roblox, claiming that the game is failing to protect children on the site from sexual predators. A quote from Murril, “Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits instead of the safety of children. Every parent should be aware of the clear and present danger posed to their children by Roblox so they can prevent the unthinkable from ever happening in their own home.”
The majority of the lawsuit highlights Roblox’s lack of safety measures, essentially saying that the lack of safety measures makes accessing minors easy and makes kids on the site vulnerable to being groomed.
Over the course of 2024, nearly 30 individuals were arrested after having been found guilty of abducting kids through Roblox.
Murrill also mentioned that too much exposure to R-rated material, such as adult language, violent content, including gore and blood, and sexual content like pornography, can be found on the app.
Roblox hasn’t come out with an official statement on the lawsuit, but they’ve taken steps to enhance security for children on the app, such as partnering with child-safety organizations for better technology.
Despite Roblox’s many measures, though, Murill still thinks the app falls short and allows the exploitation of minors across the site. If Roblox loses either of these lawsuits, it could mean a significant change to the app, as well as facing serious financial repercussions.
Whether they win or not, it’s clear that after the lawsuit is over, Roblox’s public image will most likely be ruined for a very long time, unless they work on their security system, allowing better protection for minors.
