Many fast fashion retailers like Shein and Temu were once deemed the perfect place to shop for cheap and trendy clothes. But recently, shoppers have been noticing major changes in these online shopping platforms: higher prices, lower quality fabrics, and slower shipping times.
As someone who’s ordered from these sites before, the difference in quality and experience has entirely changed from what it used to be.
The opportunities for endless shopping sprees and affordable clothing hauls are now a thing of the past. Now, shoppers are noticing that the picture advertised alongside a clothing item does not match what they receive; rather, it is much worse in quality.
Unseen by most shoppers, rising tariffs on Chinese and Asian imports have been a major cause of the fast-fashion fallout.
In an effort to reduce its dependence on overseas manufacturing, the United States (US) government has been continuously raising tariffs on Chinese and Asian imports. Lawmakers hope for companies to make more products elsewhere or bring the production back to the US.
But aside from the economic standpoint, the tariffs have also been used as a political tool, amidst the pressures and growing trade tensions between the US and China.
As both nations compete for control in the global market, brands that depend on Chinese and Asian factories are required to pay the price.
These policy shifts have not only affected the trade numbers, but it has also completely changed how global companies approach business.
For brands like Temu and Shein, it is impossible to brush aside the effects of these tariffs. As their import costs grow, retailers are forced to choose whether to lower production costs (and reduce the production quality) or increase prices.
Many opt for lowering the production expenses in order to maintain appealing prices for consumers. That often means using cheaper materials, creating less detailed items, and mass-producing designs while turning a blind eye to their qualities.
These companies are no longer trying to garner long-term customers. They’re now trying to get many quick sales by being appealing with the cheap price.
Certain items on sale have nearly doubled, with shipping delays also increasing following more trade restrictions.
Tracking Shein products, The Washington Post noted, “the price of a typical pair of casual athletic shoes rose 86 percent from $10.50 to $19.51. A typical tote bag rose from $4.46 to $8.10.”
Millions of shoppers have expressed their frustration online, venting about the rising prices and declining quality, questioning whether or not these overseas options are still worth it.
I’ve seen multiple videos of users comparing the qualities of these items from the past to their current state after the impact of the tariffs.
As a result, more are shifting away from these now unreliable shops and switching to thrift stores, Depop, and other cheaper options.
This may not be a bad thing, though; actually taking the time to find better quality pieces that you will certainly love instead of adding piles of items to your cart all at once can enhance the experience of shopping.
Fast fashion may have dominated the markets in the past, promoting quality style and speedy deliveries, but the tariffs have been immensely slowing that down.
