Recently, film production companies have been spewing out movies quicker than ever before. Most of these movies, especially for companies like Disney, consist of sequels or live-action remakes. Movies nowadays are lacking the original content that people crave. Do you ever wonder why? Why can’t these companies come up with new ideas?
Well, the answer lies in factors like economy and culture. Also, the fact that many movies have already been made adds to the difficulty of making more.
Imagine trying to come up with movie ideas, but each one that you think of already exists somewhere. Sure, you can try to make it better, or just have different characters and a slightly different plot, but people might not like the movie that much if they already saw something similar to it. They would just feel like they were rewatching another movie.
Also, since people’s ideas are influenced by things they have already seen, if these movie-makers have already seen tons of movies, their ideas for their own movies will ultimately be borrowed from other films.
And if movies do not do well and don’t get any views, then film companies can lose money. The movie industry mostly has to focus on profit if it wants to stay active. Making movies can be very expensive, especially for big companies with big budgets. Some movies that come out don’t gain back the money lost. So movie-makers have to craft ideas that many people will want to pay to see. They also have to pick a budget that will be reasonable and one that will be easier to gain back. So some movies might have a lower budget, and therefore be a worse movie.
So if a first movie is made and does well enough and/or gets them lots of money, then a sequel will be produced, hoping it does just as well. And as I’m sure that some movies have plots that make people desire a sequel, I’m also sure that some movies are better to be left with just one of them. Some movies are given an unnecessary second part, which can ultimately ruin the story or series.
Filmmakers also have to watch out for trends and culture nowadays, so that they can make stories that people would be interested in. They have to figure out what people are talking about and figure out how to make that into an enjoyable story that will gain back the money they lost from filming it and building its sets.
All of these factors make it quite difficult for these companies to come up with movies. And although this is true, if companies made more of an effort to produce more original stories, then even if it takes a long time and a lot of money, it might be worth it for them and for us viewers.
