Late December 2025, three hikers died during their trek on Mt. Baldy. These deaths are a reminder of how dangerous winter hiking can be. The three men were Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova, 19, Juan Sarat Lopez, 37, and Bayron Pedro Ramos Garcia, 36, all from Los Angeles, California. The hikers were exploring the mountain when the accident happened, where the rescue team found all three dead on the trail Devil’s Backbone.
This hike has a narrow ridge with steep drops on both ends, 500 feet deep. While it is one of the most popular parts of the mountain, it is also very dangerous, especially in winter. According to reports, Casanova fell about 500 feet in this area. While rescuers were searching for him, they found Lopez and Garcia nearby. The strong winds and icy conditions made it very difficult for helicopters and rescue teams to reach them safely.
This goes to show how risky it is to go on this hike and that even the slightest fall can end up in a fatal fall
Hikers should wear shoes with good traction like spikes, and warm, weather-resistant jackets that are coated with sherpa fibers to protect against icy conditions and strong winds.
Under these wintry conditions, strong winds and icy conditions made it almost impossible for helicopters to reach these hikers, and even rescuers would have a really hard time moving carefully along the narrow ridge to avoid slipping themselves.
The hike Devils Backbone is known to be considered dangerous. A single slip from either side will result in a deadly accident. Before going on hikes like these people need to be more aware of the potential dangers especially in the winter.
Hiking with a partner or in a group is always recommended and safer than going alone. In case of an accident other hikers can provide help and call for a rescue team. Hiking as a group ensures safety and greatly increases the chances of survival. It also ensures that emergency services are contacted as soon as possible
Hikers should also carry enough food, water, and emergency supplies in case of emergencies. Checking the weather before starting the hike and telling a friend or family member your expected return time can help rescuers find you quickly if something goes wrong.
These deaths are not only an eye opener but truly show that when it comes to winter hiking you need to know the potential dangers on the trail ahead.
Mt. Baldy attracts many people all around the area of Los Angeles and Ontario. While the mountain trails can be very rewarding to accomplish, hikers must be aware and cautious of the risks. These deaths reflect how these hikes can be dangerous even to experienced hikers.
