Our reality is being controlled by a simulation. Or at least that’s what experts say. People call this the Simulation Theory, or the Simulation Hypothesis: the idea that our world is running on a code. Rapid advancements in technology are only heightening the possibility that we are artificially created.
Movies such as “The Matrix” in 1999 have depicted ideas like this, where humanity is trapped inside a simulated reality controlled by machines, but this could now be turning into reality.
In our current world, people have already begun to create various simulations, where codes allow for individuals inside those simulations to have a form of consciousness.
The Simulation Theory was originally proposed by Nick Bostrom, as he argued that since modern technology can simulate reality, it is very likely that we are also in a simulation.
The new phenomenon has sparked a fascination among many scientists and other innovators, curious about exactly who or what is controlling our world. It could have the impact of inspiring further advancements and innovation in technology and open up endless possibilities.
Whether or not this idea proves to be true, it has created an unsettling environment for many. Being controlled by a simulation would essentially mean that life isn’t truly real. People would no longer see value in making their own choices, because at the end of the day, everything could already be decided for us.
For many others, though, especially those who grew up surrounded by video games, artificial intelligence, and digital environments, the theory might not feel so crazy.
However, life shouldn’t change despite the fact that we could be living in a simulation. Humans have their own emotions and their own opinions, so even then, people would still create purpose for themselves.
Senior Vivian Zhang shared her opinion. “I don’t think knowing the truth would completely change how I live my life, because my experiences, choices, and relationships would still matter to me either way.”
Despite all of these discussions, the possibility of our world being in a simulation is not yet backed up by any concrete form of evidence. Some scientists have even argued that it is not physically possible to be living in a simulation, claiming that there isn’t enough energy in the world to do so.
These ideas and so-called theories are ultimately just philosophical questions that push us to think more deeply about reality.
If anything, it raises questions of whether reality matters as much as the way we experience it. The relationships, emotions, and decisions that we make still feel real, even if they may be part of a higher power, or an unknown entity.
Junior Gabriella Mitchell expressed her perspective on the possibility of living in a simulation. “I would still have my everyday responsibilities, goals, and aspirations. However, I would question things in my life more and wonder if my decisions are even my own.”
There are vast majorities of the world that we haven’t explored, and most likely will never explore. So whether this world is simulated or not, it is still the only reality we know.
